Types of Iyengar Classes at Our Melbourne Studio

Iyengar Yoga Class Levels

At Luna Yoga, we offer a clear and supportive path through Iyengar Yoga at our Melbourne studio (Carlton North). Our class structure helps you learn steadily, deepen your understanding, and find the right pace for your journey - whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned practitioner. The progression through the class levels is guided by your confidence and your teacher’s recommendation.

Introductory Course - 90-minute class

Our Introductory Course is tailored for beginners. No prior experience, fitness level or flexibility is required. In these classes you will:

  • Learn foundational standing and seated poses
  • Explore gentle twists and forward bends
  • Develop awareness of alignment and breath
  • Gain understanding of how props support safe, sustainable practice

It’s a thoughtful entry into Iyengar Yoga - ideal if you are new to yoga or returning after a break. The Introductory Course lays a strong base for deeper practice. If you're curious to understand more about the foundations of this method, you can learn more about Iyengar Yoga.

General Class - 90-minute class

Once you’ve completed the Introductory Course, our General Classes guide you to build on those fundamentals. In General Class you will:

  • Reinforce the basics you learned previously
  • Begin to explore a broader range of postures - including poses that bring more challenge than the Introductory Course
  • Enhance strength, mobility, balance and stability with the support of props

General Classes help you develop consistent practice and prepare you for more advanced work.

Experienced Class - 2-hour class

Our Experienced Class is intended for regular Luna Yoga students who have built a strong foundation and are ready for deeper work. In these sessions you may:

  • Practice a wider, more challenging range of asanas, including more advanced sequences
  • Focus on alignment, awareness, endurance, and refined posture work
  • Experience deeper integration of strength, flexibility, and breath in more complex postures

This level is for those committed to developing their Iyengar practice with patience and dedication.

Led Practice — 2-hour session

Led Practice offers additional weekly practice under the guidance of our teachers and teacher-trainees. This session is:

  • A more open, practice-focused class rather than a full taught class
  • Ideal for consolidating what you’ve learned, refining your alignment and building continuity in practice

Please note: Attendees must have purchased a block of classes before attending Led Practice.

Led Practice is a supportive space for maintaining regular practice and deepening your familiarity with Iyengar Yoga at your own rhythm.

If you need to purchase a block before attending, please visit our pricing and class pass options.

Why this structure matters - The Luna Yoga difference

Our class progression reflects the authentic method of B. K. S. Iyengar, where precision, alignment, breath, and awareness are central. Using props, thoughtful sequencing and careful guidance helps you:

  • Build a safe, grounded practice regardless of experience level
  • Learn with clarity and care - no need for prior flexibility or fitness
  • Progress at your own pace, with room for refinement and growth

At Luna Yoga, we believe yoga is not a race - it's a practice of steady development, awareness, and inner balance.
