Iyengar Yoga Class Levels

Iyengar Yoga Class Levels

At Luna Yoga, we offer a clear and supportive approach to learning Iyengar Yoga at our Melbourne studio in Carlton North.

Our class structure supports steady development β€” helping students build understanding, confidence and continuity in practice over time. Whether you are completely new to yoga or an experienced practitioner, classes are designed to meet you at your current stage of practice.

Progression through the class levels is guided by your teacher and your stage of practice.

INTRODUCTORY COURSE

90-minute class

The Introductory Course is designed for beginners. No prior experience, flexibility or fitness level is required.

In these classes you will:

  • learn foundational standing and seated postures
  • explore simple twists and forward extensions
  • develop awareness of alignment and breath
  • learn how props support clarity, stability and safe practice

This course provides a steady and thoughtful introduction to Iyengar Yoga and establishes the foundations for ongoing practice.

GENERAL CLASS

90-minute class

General Classes build upon the foundations introduced in the Introductory Course.

In these classes you will:

  • reinforce and deepen foundational postures
  • explore a broader range of asanas
  • develop greater strength, mobility, balance and stability
  • continue learning how to work with precision and awareness

General Classes support the development of a regular and consistent practice.

EXPERIENCED CLASS

2-hour class

Experienced Classes are intended for regular Luna Yoga students who have established a solid foundation in practice.

These classes may include:

  • a broader and more demanding range of postures
  • longer and more complex sequences
  • deeper work in alignment, endurance and awareness
  • more refined exploration of the Iyengar method

This level supports students committed to sustained and ongoing development in practice.

LED PRACTICE

2-hour class

Led Practice provides additional weekly practice under the guidance of teachers and teacher trainees.

This session is:

  • more practice-focused than a fully taught class
  • intended to support continuity and regularity in practice
  • an opportunity to refine understanding through repetition and observation

Students attending Led Practice must also be enrolled in regular classes.

PRANAYAMA CLASS

1-hour Zoom class

Pranayama classes introduce the practice of yogic breathing as taught in the Iyengar tradition.

Students learn to develop awareness, steadiness and sensitivity through carefully guided breathing techniques and supported positioning.

Pranayama classes include:

  • preparation for pranayama practice
  • foundational supine pranayamas
  • supportive seated pranayama practice
  • 20-minute meditation
  • concluding savasana

Pranayama is generally introduced after students have established regular asana practice and sufficient steadiness in the body and mind.

EARLY MORNING INTENSIVES

Four- mornings series (2-hour sessions)

Early Morning Intensives consist of four consecutive mornings classes held once in each 6-week block. They provide an opportunity for sustained and consistent practice over a concentrated period.

Practising in the early morning supports continuity, discipline and deeper observation.

These sessions may include:

  • progressive sequencing across the week
  • deeper exploration of particular asana groups
  • slower, more sustained work

Early Morning Intensives are suitable for students wishing to deepen their engagement with the practice.

WHY CLASS STRUCTURE MATTERS

The progression through classes reflects the method developed by B. K. S. Iyengar, where precision, sequencing, alignment and awareness are developed progressively over time.

Using props and careful guidance allows students to:

  • build a safe and stable practice
  • progress steadily without force or strain
  • develop understanding through direct experience
  • work according to their individual needs and capacity

At Luna Yoga, yoga is approached as a practice of gradual development rather than quick achievement.
